Entering kindergarten is fun, exciting, surprising, creative, scary, difficult, overwhelming and so much more! Your child is out of his/her routine, adjusting to new people and different rules. Your child is being introduced to reading, writing and math, often for the first time. How can you, as a parent make the first year of school a positive experience? Play “Fast Track” games with your child every day. Fast Track games make teaching your child beginning reading and basic math skills fun for both of you.
The kindergarten curriculum can challenge your child’s confidence or confirm it. Children enter with varying degrees of familiarity with the program and different emotions. Some are eager and enthusiastic… others are more reserved and uncomfortable. It is important to become aware of the objectives of the curriculum. Meet with your child’s teacher early in the school year. Ask to see the materials used to teach beginning reading and basic math. Then focus on making your child’s first year in school a positive experience for both parent and child. Remember practicing at home can and will prove to be very beneficial if you relax and keep it fun.
Revel in your child’s success. See the world as he sees it. Watch as he explores new areas and his awareness of the world grows. Stay involved in the program and takes a lot of pictures. The year will pass so quickly… and this is just the beginning.
